RE: [10GBASE-CX4] Comments on latest revision




Other reasons for specifying the common mode voltage that Dan did not mention are the concern about the voltage on the series capacitors, and the spike on plugging in the connector. Although no-one appears to want to built CX4 drivers using a 12V supply, or the like, it is theoretically possible; in this case, a 6V capacitor at the receiver input (adequate normally) is being over-stressed, and this load should be shared by the driver (which can be AC coupled). Also, the voltage spike on plugging in a DC-coupled driver would be quite large, and there is some concern about the injected charge under 'hot plugging', so both the capacitor size and the voltage step are matters to be limited.
