Re: [802.3_25GSMF] [P802.3cc_25GSMF] Proposed responses to comments receive on D2.0

All,

I’m seeking input on Comment #73 on D2.0, concerning the SIGNAL_DETECT FAIL condition of (Table 114-4) and OFF transmitter power (Table 114-6). The original baseline spec was <-30 dBm, which was the same as standards (e.g. see Clause 88). In D1.2 we agreed to relax the value to -25 dBm to make the spec more compatible with implementations that share a single light source over multiple channels (e.g. PSM4). In such cases, -30dBm is difficult to achieve, since it needs to be realized through just the extinction of the optical modulator.

Comment #73 proposes relaxing SIGNAL DETECT further to -20 dBm for just 25GBASE-LR. Also, the comment proposes to lower the OFF transmitter power to -20 dBm for both 25GBASE-LR and -ER. Despite being near the maximum sensitivity of 25GBASE-ER, a higher Tx OFF power is not a problem for it because of the minimum channel loss requirement.

-20 dBm was already proposed in a past comment against an earlier draft, but the proposal was rejected due to the concern with 25GBASE-ER as just described. This time, the proposal is just to make the change for 25GBASE-LR, since it is the only standard likely to be used for breakout termination. For reference, -20 dBm was also decided as the spec for 100GBASE-DR in P802.3cd D1.1, which also has potential use in shared source implementations.

To help make a decision on Comment #73, could interested people please share your view Thanks in advance.

Colleagues,
I have posted the editor’s proposed responses to the comments received against D2.0 of 802.3cc. They can be found, listed by clause and also by ID, at: http://www.ieee802.org/3/cc/comments/index.shtml.

These are the same proposed responses that Kohichi reviewed during our ad hoc meeting today. Pleae review the proposed responses and let myself or Kohichi know if you plan to accept them.

We will focus our task force meeting next Wednesday, Jan 11th, on comment resolution. If you would like to make a presentation on any of the comments, please let me know ASAP. I will need the pdf slides of your presentation by the end of the day, tomorrow Thursday Jan 5th.

Best Regards,
David Lewis
