[802.3_DIALOG] November plenary meeting announcement

TO: IEEE 802.3 Voters, Observers and Liaisons

Dear Colleagues,

IEEE 802.3 will meet Monday 3rd November through Thursday 6th November 2014 in San Antonio, TX, USA. The IEEE 802.3 meetings are scheduled to occur in the Grand Hyatt San Antonio, San Antonio, TX, USA. As always, the IEEE 802 LMSC session announcement, registration and current hotel information can be found through the 'Next IEEE 802 Plenary session notice' link on our home web page <www.ieee802.org/3>. To receive email updates and reminders for the plenary sessions, subscribe to the stds-802-ALL reflector <http://listserv.ieee.org>.

The IEEE 802.3 working group (WG) opening plenary meeting will begin at 13:00 on Monday 3rd November, and the IEEE 802.3 WG closing plenary meeting will begin at 13:00 on Thursday 6th November. Task Force (TF), Study Group (SG), standing committee and any appropriate ad hoc meetings will be scheduled between the opening and closing IEEE 802.3 meetings as illustrated in our typical schedule also found on our web site <http://www.ieee802.org/3/plenary.html>. The draft agenda, as well as liaison letters received so far, are available in the minutes area <http://www.ieee802.org/3/minutes/nov14/index.html> and will be updated as required prior to the meeting. The agenda will be approved at the meeting.

We will gather two records of attendance, the attendance tracking tool and attendance books in each meeting. The attendance tool will be the only official record of attendance for building and maintaining WG membership. The meeting attendance books will be used to record the attendance in the minutes for each meeting and it is important that you review these minutes to make sure your attendance is recorded correctly as this will be the backup should there be an issue with the attendance tool.

Attendance credit toward membership requires attendance at three of the four days of the IEEE 802.3 session, independent of how long a particular TF or SG might be meeting. The attendance tracking tool will only allow sign in on Monday at the opening IEEE 802.3 plenary and on Thursday at the closing IEEE 802.3 plenary meeting (not during the Thursday morning meetings). A number of WG decisions are expected during the IEEE 802.3 meetings (most on Thursday during the closing meeting). Depending on the amount of discussion, the Thursday closing meeting may run beyond our target 18:00 ending time, so please plan your travel accordingly.

Additional subgroup information follows. Information for contacting Task Force chairs, and archival project information can be found on our web site: <www.ieee802.org/3>. Please note that the IEEE 802.3 Industry Connections Next Generation Ethernet Passive Optical Network (NG-EPON) Ad Hoc will be meeting on the Sunday prior to the IEEE 802.3 Opening plenary.

I look forward to seeing you in San Antonio, TX, USA.

IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet Over Plastic Optical Fiber Study Group
------------------------------------------------------------------

Study Group home page: <http://www.ieee802.org/3/GEPOFSG/index.html>

This will be the fourth meeting of the IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet Over Plastic Optical Fiber Study Group. The Study Group has developed and approved the draft IEEE P802.3bv Standard for Ethernet Amendment: Physical Layer Specifications and Management Parameters for 1000 Mb/s Operation Over Plastic Optical Fiber PAR, as well as supporting CSD and objectives. The draft PAR, CSD and objectives are pending IEEE 802.3 Working Group approval at this meeting prior to seeking approval of both the PAR and CSD by the IEEE 802 LMSC Executive committee. The draft PAR, CSD and objectives can be accessed as follows:

Draft PAR request: <http://www.ieee802.org/3/GEPOFSG/P802_3bv_PAR_240914.pdf>
Draft CSD: <http://www.ieee802.org/3/GEPOFSG/CSD_GEPOF_0914.pdf>
Draft objectives: <http://www.ieee802.org/3/GEPOFSG/Objectives_GEPOF_2_0714.pdf>

Since the submission deadline for the December 9th (submittal deadline 20th October) NesCom meeting occurs prior to the date of the November IEEE 802 EC meeting, I have pre-submitted the draft PAR to NesCom on the understanding that any changes to the draft PAR text resulting from the Plenary review process will be promptly communicated to the NesCom Administrator and should the IEEE 802.3 Working Group or the IEEE 802 LMSC Executive Committee not approve the submission, it will be removed from the NesCom agenda.

You may recall that the IEEE P802.3bv PAR, and supporting CSD, were submitted for approval at the July IEEE 802 plenary meeting. The CSD however did not gain approval of the IEEE 802.3 Working Group, and due to that I removed PAR and CSD from the IEEE 802 LMSC July closing Executive Committee agenda and the PAR from the August IEEE-SA NesCom agenda.

As a result the IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet Over Plastic Optical Fiber Study Group have now updated the draft IEEE P802.3bv PAR and CSD. The PAR is little changed from the one submitted to you in July, with a sentence added to item 8.1 in response to a IEEE 802.11 comment received in July suggesting that the acronym VDE be expanded. The CSD document provided is change marked for review convenience, these changes were made in response to comments received in July from the IEEE 802.11 Working Group and from IEEE 802.3 participants.

Questions about the Study Group can be addressed to the Study Group Chair, Mr Bob Grow.

Next Generation Enterprise Access BASE-T PHY call for interest
--------------------------------------------------------------

CFI page: <http://www.ieee802.org/3/cfi/request_1114_1.html>

The following request for agenda time for a Next Generation Enterprise Access BASE-T PHY call for interest has been received from Yong Kim.

----

This is a call for interest to initiate a Study Group to explore the need for one or more new Ethernet speed(s) between 1 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s over balanced twisted pair cabling. We believe there is a market need, driven by IEEE Std 802.11ac wireless access points, to support higher than 1 Gb/s Ethernet rates at a 100m reach using the installed base of Cat5e (or better) structured cabling. Higher performance end devices like desktop and laptop PCs, as well as other enterprise applications for Ethernet, will also benefit from the new data rates provided by this work.

----

The call for interest will take place during the IEEE 802.3 Opening Plenary on the afternoon of Monday 3rd November. A call for interest consensus building meeting has been scheduled to occur from 18:00 to 19:30 on the evening of Tuesday 4th November. The vote to determine if a Study Group will be formed will take place at the IEEE 802.3 Closing Plenary on the afternoon of Thursday 6th November.

25GBASE-T call for interest
---------------------------

CFI page: <http://www.ieee802.org/3/cfi/request_1114_2.html>

The following request for agenda time for a 25GBASE-T call for interest has been received from David Chalupsky.

----

The rapid progress of the 25 Gb/s Ethernet Study Group highlighted the broad market potential for 25 Gb/s Ethernet switch-to-server interconnect in a range of data center wiring architectures including within-rack, adjacent rack, middle-of-row, and end-of-row switching topologies. At the 10 Gb/s rate, the use of BASE-T for these applications is growing as an augment to fiber and direct-attach twinax copper. The IEEE P802.3bq 40GBASE-T Task Force has been addressing switch-to-server interconnect for these topologies at a 40 Gb/s rate. At this time, there is no path for data centers to utilize cost-effective and backwards compatible BASE-T technology for 25 Gb/s Ethernet. This Call For Interest is a request for the formation of a study group to explore 25 Gb/s BASE-T Ethernet and potentially extending the work of the IEEE P802.3bq Task Force to include it.

----

The call for interest will take place during the IEEE 802.3 Opening Plenary on the afternoon of Monday 3rd November. A call for interest consensus building meeting has been scheduled to occur from 19:30 to 21:00 on the evening of Tuesday 4th November. The vote to determine if a Study Group will be formed will take place at the IEEE 802.3 Closing Plenary on the afternoon of Thursday 6th November.
