[802.3_DIALOG] IEEE 802.3 July 2017 plenary meeting announcement



Dear Colleagues,

IEEE 802.3 will meet Monday 10th July through Thursday 13th July 2017 in Berlin, Germany. The IEEE 802.3 meetings are scheduled to occur in the Estrel Hotel, Berlin, Germany. As always, the IEEE 802 LMSC session announcement, registration and current hotel information can be found through the 'Next IEEE 802 Plenary session notice' link on our home web page <www.ieee802.org/3>. To receive email updates and reminders for the plenary sessions, subscribe to the stds-802-ALL reflector <http://listserv.ieee.org>.

The IEEE 802.3 Working Group (WG) opening plenary meeting will begin at 10:00 on Monday 10th July, and the IEEE 802.3 WG closing plenary meeting will begin at 13:00 on Thursday 13th July. Task Force (TF), standing committee and any appropriate ad hoc meetings will be scheduled between the opening and closing IEEE 802.3 meetings as illustrated in our typical schedule also found on our web site <http://www.ieee802.org/3/plenary.html>. The draft agenda, as well as liaison letters received so far, are available in the minutes area <http://www.ieee802.org/3/minutes/jul17/index.html> and will be updated as required prior to the meeting. The agenda will be approved at the meeting.

We will gather two records of attendance, the attendance tracking tool and attendance books in each meeting. The attendance tool will be the only official record of attendance for building and maintaining WG membership. The meeting attendance books will be used to record the attendance in the minutes for each meeting and it is important that you review these minutes to make sure your attendance is recorded correctly as this will be the backup should there be an issue with the attendance tool.

Attendance credit toward membership requires attendance at three of the four days of the IEEE 802.3 session, independent of how many days a particular subgroup might be meeting. The attendance tracking tool will only allow sign in on Monday at the opening IEEE 802.3 plenary and on Thursday at the closing IEEE 802.3 plenary meeting (not during the Monday afternoon or Thursday morning meetings). A number of WG decisions are expected during the IEEE 802.3 meetings (most on Thursday during the closing meeting). Depending on the amount of discussion, the Thursday closing meeting may run beyond our target 18h00 ending time, so please plan your travel accordingly. Additional subgroup information follows.

Maintenance Task Force

The Maintenance Task Force will be considering new maintenance requests, reviewing the status of outstanding maintenance requests, and progressing IEEE 802.3 adoptions by ISO/IEC SC6 under the PSDO agreement.

The Maintenance Task Force is also progressing a revision project, IEEE P802.3 (IEEE 802.3cj) Maintenance #12 (revision), to revise IEEE Std 802.3-2015. This revision project is necessary to meet IEEE-SA requirement to enable future amendments to be considered for approval as IEEE Standards. The Revision will include the merge of currently published amendments, and the currently published corrigenda and selected maintenance changes. It is also expected that an IEEE P802.3 (IEEE 802.3cj) draft will be submitted for Working Group preview in preparation for a request to proceed to Working Group ballot.

IEEE P802.3bs 200 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s Ethernet Task Force

This will be the twenty-first meeting of the IEEE P802.3bs 200 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s Ethernet Task Force. The 200 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s Ethernet Task Force is expected to be in comment resolution on comments received on the 2nd Sponsor recirculation ballot of 200 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s Ethernet draft D3.2 that is due to close prior to the meeting. With the project near to completing Sponsor ballot it is expected that the Task Force will request conditional approval to proceed to RevCom submittal.

IEEE P802.3bt DTE Power via MDI over 4-Pair Task Force

This will be the twenty-fourth meeting of the IEEE P802.3bt DTE Power via MDI over 4-Pair Task Force. The DTE Power via MDI over 4-Pair Task Force is expected to be in comment resolution on comments received on the 5th Working Group recirculation ballot of DTE Power via MDI over 4-Pair draft D2.5 that is due to close prior to the meeting. With the project near to completing Working Group ballot it is expected that the Task Force will request conditional, or unconditional, approval to proceed to Sponsor ballot.

The Task Force has also developed and approved a draft IEEE P802.3bt PAR extension which is necessary as the exiting IEEE P802.3bt PAR expires on 31st December 2017. The draft PAR extension is pending IEEE 802.3 Working Group approval at this meeting prior to seeking approval by the IEEE 802 LMSC Executive committee. This will be the tenth meeting of the IEEE P802.3ca 25 Gb/s, 50 Gb/s, and 100 Gb/s Passive Optical Networks Task Force. The IEEE P802.3ca Task Force continues to work on selection of a set of baseline proposals to satisfy the project objectives, progressing towards a technically complete draft for working group ballot.

New Ethernet Applications Industry Connections Ad Hoc

This will be the fourth meeting of the newly chartered IEEE 802.3 New Ethernet Applications (NEA) Industry Connections Ad Hoc. The IEEE 802.3 NEA Ad Hoc will hold two session during the plenary week, one session covering both Next-Generation multimode Fibre (MMF) PMD and 100Gb/s Electrical Signaling Over Copper, and one in relation to use cases for single pair Ethernet.

Beyond 10km Optical PHYs call for interest

The following request for agenda time for a Beyond 10km Optical PHYs call for interest has been received from John D'Ambrosia.

Over the past four years, the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet WG has initiated several projects that were chartered with developing new Ethernet rates, including 50GbE, 200GbE, and 400GbE.  The optical focus of these efforts has been solutions that address reaches of 10 km or less.  There is an emerging need to provide Ethernet solutions at these data rates to support the bandwidth growth of applications that extend beyond 10km.  This Call for Interest is to request the formation of a study group to explore the development of new single mode fiber PHYs that address reaches greater than 10km for 50GbE, 200GbE, and 400GbE.

The call for interest will take place during the IEEE 802.3 Opening Plenary on the morning of Monday 10th July. A call for interest consensus building meeting has been scheduled to occur from 18:30 to 20:00 on the evening of Tuesday 11th July. The vote to determine if a Study Group will be formed will take place at the IEEE 802.3 Closing Plenary on the afternoon of Thursday 13th July.


IEEE 802.3 SCC 18 ad hoc

The IEEE 802.3 SCC 18 ad hoc was re-charted at the IEEE 802.3 May 2017 interim meeting and continues to consider IEEE SCC18 items of interest, such as proposed Tentative Interim Amendments (TIA) related to IEEE 802.3 and the draft input to IEC TC64/PT716. The ad hoc will hold a meeting during the plenary week.

IEEE 802.3 Isolation ad hoc

The IEEE 802.3 Isolation Ad Hoc was charted at the IEEE 802.3 May 2017 interim meeting to examine the current isolation text in IEEE Std 802.3 and, if required, build consensus on proposed updates, either through the maintenance request process or amendment project. The ad hoc is expect to hold its first call shortly, and will hold a meeting during the plenary week.
