Re: [STDS-802-3-EPOC] Downstream Electrical Output and Input Requirements for EPoC

Dear Joe and Saif,

Thank you for sharing this contribution. I am very glad to see such a
detailed proposal for the largely empty Clause 100.

Before I get down to any details, I'd like to understand what the
expectation for this contribution is, i.e., whether you plan to have it
adopted as a baseline proposal in November, just present and have it
discussed, or something altogether else. If the adoption is what you're
looking for, I think there needs to be some work, both editorial and
technical, done before it is included in the draft.

My most immediate concern is the amount of definitions and terms that we do
not have defined at this time anywhere in the draft, and they are brought in
specific use cases, without any definition / explanation.

Furthermore, I am also concerned with the number of options and sub-options
which are being introduced. This will add to complexity, cost, as well as
compliance testing typically applicable to 802.3 PHYs. Even on a brief read,
there is a substantial overlap and repetition of individual requirements,
that should be weeded out before we move forward with this document. We need
to decide what is really mandatory and testable and what is just informative
- right now, it is hard to figure that out, particularly because of the
amount of requirements put forth for the PHY.

Subject: [STDS-802-3-EPOC] Downstream Electrical Output and Input
Requirements for EPoC

Colleagues,

Using the recently published DOCSIS 3.1 PHY specification
(CM-SP-PHYv3.1-I01-131029) as a guide, Saif Rahman and I have put together
proposal text for the EPoC downstream electrical output/input requirements.
Much of this content was contributed and reviewed in that forum by Tom
Kolze. We reviewed these at a high level during the EPoC PHY Ad Hoc meeting
today and intend to bring these to Dallas as a baseline proposal.

Please find that document attached.

I have added document comments that detail which sections of the D3.1 PHY
specification the content is based upon and whether that content is new to
EPoC (not yet covered by a technical motion) or if based on already motioned
and accepted technical proposals. You will notice that some of the larger
tables contain a mix of both.

We are working on a similar document for the Upstream which we hope to have
ready for a high level review for next week's EPoC PHY Ad Hoc meeting.

Please review and feel free to reply to the reflector with questions or
comments.
