Re: [802SEC] Student Outreach Ad Hoc Purpose and Scope

Paul,
Unfortunately the call this time was in the middle of the early morning hours or I would have attended.

Ben makes a lot of great points below. In particular those about participation, reviewing proposals, running simulations, checking math... These are all great ways I could see where we can get real interaction with the students that tie in with what they're doing now in school.

Best Regards,
Clint

Hi All,
Thanks Paul.  I was unable to attend because of meeting conflicts. I appreciate the work, and I think the purpose and scope are good. But I do not entirely agree with the rationale. The statement that the current rules provide no incentive is, IMO, incorrect.  There are many really sound reasons why professors and students would benefit greatly from participation in 802 now.  Those benefits and incentives are not well understood by the community. I agree that we can make it easier (lower the already low barriers) and have endorsed several suggestions such as removing the "one time" use of student attendance fee.   However equally important in the outreach effort is to educate the educators, so to speak, so that professors and their students are aware of all the benefits of participating in 802.  If this equally or perhaps even more important than assessing and evolving our rules.   Some of the real incentives of participating in 802 include the opportunity to engage with professionals who are actually doing what the students are studying, and in some cases the opportunity to colaborate and learn from the people who have created some of the things they are studying.  Learning about the industry, interacting with innovators and practitioners in The Real World, and perhaps the greatest incentive is the chance to contribute in a positive way to advancing through standards the technologies and applications that enhance the lives of billions of people.

Lowering financial barriers is great and important, but ultimately the biggest barrier is awareness.

To further the value to students, I think we should take a systems view:  the real value comes not just from showing up (which is of course essential) but also from participation and engagement with purpose and passion.  Many of us could be doing other (more lucrative) things but choose to spend a lot of our time developing standards.  When I engage with fellow 802ers I feel enthusiasm and passion along with all the practical and commercial motivations.  IMO the most powerful incentive is contributing to something that brings value to many other people, that ultimately finds it's way onto the shelves of your favorite retailer and into fabric of daily life - knowing some of my grey matter helped make that happen.  So IMO if we create "lower barriers" via reduced or eliminated fees, we should couple that with participation goals:  your students and professors can attend at reduced cost with some related responsibility.   Take a role in a task group. Do something! Review and analyze a proposal and provide feedback to the contributors such as validating the math or simulation results or whatever is appropriate.   This would amplify and multiply the value of the experience IMO.

Just one "wish I'd known then what I know now" engineer's perspective.
