Re: [STDS-802-11-TGBE] Follow-up on action regarding Figure 5-3 in document 11-21/577

Thanks, Mike.  Makes sense.

I would personally argue that we should have this new figure look like Figure 5-1 (and we should keep Figures 5-2 and 5-7 aligned, as well), so it is easily understandable how this architecture and stack-up compare to the other alternatives.  (It helps to emphasize the similarities, and the differences.)  So, I would very much like to see REVme consider whether 5-1, 5-2 and 5-7 should be updated to deprecate/remove this block as well.

@Duncan, by the way, since there already is a Figure 5-3, should your new figure be Figure 5-2a?

Mark

Hi Mike,

Thanks a lot for the investigation! I’ll remove the “MSDU and Integrity Protection (Optional)" block in my next revision of the doc then.

Thanks,

Duncan

CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the organization.

Hi everyone,

During the Monday evening TGbe session, there was a discussion on the security blocks in Figure 5-3 in that presentation. All three blocks are also included in the baseline in Figure 5-1.

The blocks are: "MSDU and Integrity Protection (Optional)", "Packet Number Assignment", and "MPDU encryption".

While the latter two blocks are used by all cryptographic encapsulation mechanisms, the first block, "MSDU and Integrity Protection (Optional)" is only used by TKIP. Given that TKIP is deprecated in IEEE 802.11-2020, this block needs to be removed from document 11-21/577 since TKIP cannot be used with MLO.

I can take an action in REVme to discuss figure 5.1 to see whether we should modify the labeling of that block.

Cheers,

Mike
