Re: [STDS-802-11-TGBN] Revised resolution for CID 6106

Hello fellow Roamers,

I’ve revised the resolution for CID 6106 based on the feedback received. The updated resolution updates clause 11.3.1 to allow QoS Null frame to be sent to current AP MLD during draining period (i.e., while in state 4c). A normative ‘may’ sentence is to the DL draining clause (37.15.10) stating that the non-AP MLD can use ps mode on its links w. the target or current to manage DL from either AP during the DL draining period.

Hi Pooya, Pei, Guogang, All,

Thank you to those had offline conversation with me on this topic.

The intention of this discussion and the NOTE is to make everyone aware of the rules governing the non-AP MLD’s behavior and the options it has at its disposal during DL draining. To be clear, I am not looking to define new mechanism(s) to handle the situation.

Providing additional clarification:

  1. After ST prep, the setup links of the target are in power save / doze state, and the non-AP can use this as tool during draining (after st exec).
  2. During DL draining period (i.e., after ST exec resp), the non-AP is in state 4c w.r.t current and is not allowed to send QoS Null or QoS Data frames to the current. Therefore, it cannot send PM state (via QoS Null) to the current AP MLD.

I’ve updated the NOTE based on additional feedback to make clearer on the state of the non-AP during draining:

NOTE — During the downlink draining period, the non-AP MLD is in State 4c with the current AP MLD (and cannot send QoS Null or QoS Data frame to the current AP MLD):

  • A single-radio non-AP MLD can continue to utilize its PS mode indication with the target AP MLD to signal its unavailability while receiving DL frames from the current AP MLD, since it cannot simultaneously receive from both APs.
  • A multi-radio non-AP MLD can receive from both the current AP MLD and the target AP MLD concurrently. Its affiliated STAs on the target AP MLD's links are in power save mode (see 37.15.6.5) and can exit power save mode as needed.

Abhi

Hi Abhi, you mention the single radio STA issue is signaling unavailability to target AP while receiving DL from current, but links with target are already in PS initially so there's nothing to do here. Unless, the device came out of PS on target links, and intends to go back to PS to receive the rest of the DL.

Hi Abhi,

Thanks for sharing this revised NOTE. I provided my comments on the multi-radio non-AP MLD bullet a few days ago via email.

If the multi-radio non-AP MLD is STR, then it is ok. However, if the multi-radio non-AP MLD is NSTR, I think we may need additional text ( e.g., to handle the PPDU end time alignment issue). Thanks.

Best regards,

Hi All,

Thank you for the offline feedback. I discussed this with some of you. Let me reiterate the motivation behind the NOTE.

There are 3 driving factors:

  1. UL frame restriction toward current AP MLD (see 11.3.1, State 4c)

During DL draining, the non-AP MLD is in State 4c with the current AP MLD. Clause 11.3.1 already restricts UL to Control frames and UHR Reconfiguration Notify frames only. The NOTE refers to this for clarity.

  1. PS mode w.r.t target AP MLD links for all non-AP MLDs (see 37.15.6.5)

Upon successful ST preparation, the non-AP MLD's affiliated STAs on the target AP MLD's links are in power save / doze state. This is applicable to all non-AP MLDs (i.e., not limited to a single-radio non-AP MLD).

  1. Single-radio vs. multi-radio behavior during DL draining

Given (2), the single-radio-specific issue is signaling temporary unavailability toward the target AP MLD while receiving DL from the current AP MLD. An EMLSR non-AP MLD faces the same constraint. A multi-radio non-AP MLD can receive from both APs concurrently and can exit PS mode on the target AP MLD's links as needed.

The proposed updated note:

(#6106) NOTE — During the downlink draining period (State 4c with the current AP MLD):

  • A single-radio non-AP MLD can use the PS mode indication toward the target AP MLD to signal its temporary unavailability while receiving DL frames from the current AP MLD, since it cannot simultaneously receive from both APs.
  • A multi-radio non-AP MLD can receive from both the current AP MLD and the target AP MLD concurrently. Its affiliated STAs on the target AP MLD's links are in power save mode (see 37.15.6.5) and can exit power save mode as needed.

Please let me know if you have additional suggestions.

Regards,

Abhi

Hi All,

We discussed resolution for CID 6106 during the TGbn MAC call on 29th. The resolution was deferred for further discussions. Since then, I’ve been receiving offline feedback on that topic, and I have revised the resolution based on the inputs received so far. In addition, I have included CID 12437 in my doc as it is related to the same issue.

Here’s the revised text for the NOTE:

NOTE - During the DL draining period, a non-AP MLD can use power save mode on its setup link(s) with the target AP MLD to manage its frame exchanges with the current AP MLD and the target AP MLD. The following additional considerations apply depending on the capabilities of the non-AP MLD:

-        A multi-radio non-AP MLD can simultaneously receive DL data frames from the current AP MLD on one link and exchange frames with the target AP MLD on another link.

-        A non-AP MLD operating in EMLSR mode with the current AP MLD can manage DL reception from the current AP MLD by choosing not to respond to an ICF sent by the current AP MLD.

-        A single-radio non-AP MLD that does not support EMLSR must complete or terminate early the DL draining period with the current AP MLD before initiating frame exchanges with the target AP MLD.

Could you please review the updated text and let me know if you have any additional feedback?
