Greetings,
I have been asked several times about the current status of the Sept 2018 802 Wireless interim at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

Bob, Dawn and I are keenly aware of the concerns expressed to us.

Current Status

Hilton Waikoloa Village is open and ready to welcome you!

As of Thursday, May 31, 2018, air is clear and skies are partly cloudy over Waikoloa, Hawai'i. Trade winds have returned, bringing clean air for the rest of the week.

Hawai'i Volcano Observatory is monitoring eruption activity at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and in the Puna district of the County of Hawai'i. These areas are located about 100 miles from Hilton Waikoloa Village. To provide perspective on the distance (via Google Maps):

  • 102 miles - Hilton Waikoloa Village to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park
  • 95 miles - Los Angeles, CA to Santa Barbara, CA
  • 95 miles - New York City, NY to Philadelphia, PA
  • 95 miles - Dallas, TX to Waco, TX
  • 92 miles - Chicago, IL to Milwaukee, WI
  • 87 miles - San Francisco, CA to Sacramento, CA

There is NO IMPACT on resort operations. There is also NO IMPACT to airport operations at Kona International Airport. No effects of volcanic activity, such as earthquakes, lava or volcanic ash are affecting or expected to affect anywhere near the resort area. We are fully open and ready to welcome all guests.

To understand why there is no impact at Hilton Waikoloa Village:

  • Hilton Waikoloa Village and Kona International Airport are located on the Western coast of the Island of Hawaiʻi. The Island of Hawaiʻi is over 4,000 square miles in size and is the largest island in the United States. The Island of Hawaiʻi is larger than Puerto Rico.
  • Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is located on the Eastern coast of the island, 100 miles, or 2 hours away by car from Hilton Waikoloa Village. Guests from the hotel must travel past several mountains (including Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, two of the largest mountains on Earth) to reach the opposite side of the island, where Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is located.
  • Island trade winds, which are the predominant weather pattern, keep volcanic haze and gases to the south of the island. The resort typically enjoys fresh breezes off the North Pacific and Kohala mountains.
  • Kīlauea Volcano at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has been continuously erupting since 1983, with no impact to resort or airport operations during that time.

The resort is providing relief efforts for the affected communities, including donations of goods and funds.
