[802.3_RTPGE] AW: [802.3_RTPGE] PHY & cabling objectives



We will provide a tutorial on WakeUP of a vehicle (also the 100 ms link acquisition time requirement), EMC, and on mechanical stress tests in automotive. Probably we will get further tutorials for San Diego.

 

We know we have to provide further information from our industry.

A good point. Often study groups have used tutorials to help others understand new markets and concepts. Probably something that Steve Carlson and his team may wish to consider to help set the stage for the PAR.

Brad,

 

Just one small note – for those not participating directly in the SG work, it might be beneficial to define clearly (or point to a reference where it would be defined) what “automotive” and “industrial” environment really means. I am sure it is obvious to all folks involved in the SG, but also wider 802.3 membership will have to understand these terms prior to taking a vote.

Thanks again for arranging today’s conference call. Lots of great discussion.

 

George Zimmerman and I were talking off-line about potential objectives. Objectives are tough because the study group needs them to bound the scope of the project without limiting the potential for the task force to consider multiple solutions. 

 

With that in mind, here’s some potential considerations:

 

Define a twisted-pair copper cabling channel model(s) that supports:

·         Fewer than four twisted-pairs

·         X connectors

 

Define a 1000 Mb/s PHY that would support channels of:

·         At least 40 m in an automotive environment

·         At least x m in an industrial environment

 

The number of connectors still needs to be defined, and there also needs to be some presentations around the reach requirements for the markets/applications.

 

It would also be interesting to get feedback from those participating in the study group about whether or not the study group might wish to consider a reach for the shorter-reach consumer market.
