100Gb/s Ethernet Electrical Backplane and Copper Cable Assemblies Call for Interest

The following request for agenda time for a "Call for interest" has been received from John D'Ambrosia. It will be discussed at the IEEE 802 LMSC November 2010 Plenary meeting in Dallas, TX, USA.

Front panel port density and electrical backplane bandwidth requirements are being driven upward by aggregation and computing applications. For the front panel, these applications will drive the need for a narrower 100 Gb/s Ethernet interface for copper twinaxial cable assemblies than currently defined by 100GBASE-CR10. For the backplane, these applications will drive the need for a 100 Gb/s Ethernet interface which is not currently defined by an IEEE standard. This call for interest will request the formation of a study group to explore the market need and solutions for these application spaces.

This "Call for interest" will take place during the IEEE 802.3 Opening Plenary on the afternoon of Monday 8th November. A call for interest meeting has been scheduled to occur from 6:30PM to 8:00PM on the evening of Tuesday 9th November. The vote to determine if a Study Group will be formed will take place at the IEEE 802.3 Closing Plenary on the afternoon of Thursday 11th November.
