The proposed changes to the Chair’s guidelines are, as I understand:
- To change the title of 4.2 from “Student Fees” to “Student Outreach Program” – this seems pro-forma, but also suggests you need to participate in a particular program to get the reduced fee (see below).
- Add a “Purpose” for the student outreach program – this seems fine, and is good explanatory information – and I think this is our goal – however it is nonfunctional and just verbiage in the chair’s guidelines, without effect.
- To delete the (recently added) requirement of “LMSC member certification” and replace it with an invitation to the new member orientation.
Now, my thoughts:
I think this one is the one that needs the most discussion. I’m not strongly opposed, but I think this guts the whole thing and removes any notion of a program. We added this requirement to institute some contact between the student and the leadership of the LMSC. This change came in after a discussion regarding participants that we came across somewhat randomly who didn’t really seem to fit the concept of students ‘getting a taste of’ 802. The proposed change would remove the new linkage to a require contact with a member of the LMSC. Further, it makes it unclear what any “Program” is – it’s just a fee reduction. If the participant wishes to participate under the “Student Outreach Program” – there is no required contact, no session at which attendance is required, in short, no “program” at all.
I’d like to see SOME requirement for contact – making the experience different from a normal experience of a meeting. ANYONE can come to the orientation meeting….
If we adopt the changes in #3, I’d probably leave the title to be “Student Fees”. We aren’t requiring any participation in a “program” or even an email between a member of the LMSC and the individual.
