 Bob,
Thanks
for the updated list - here are a few tweaks.
Adjust
Neighbor - A station which is exactly one
segment away.
Upstream Neighbor - The upstream station that
is exactly one link away.
Downstream Neighbor - The downstream station
that is exactly one link away.
Hello
Message - A generic term for a topology discovery protocol message
which announces the presence of a station.
Replace
in the
discovery section, replace "ring segment" with "partition segment"

Add
MAC
Address Query - A request by one station for the MAC address of another
station.
As to
the your question about needing the layer agnostic definitions, there are plenty
of pre-802
and
current proprietary communication protocols where the layers where not
separated.
(Just
think of some badly done intra-card protocol in some product that you came
in
contact with in the past).  In these the PHY and
LINK layers are specified in one big jumble.
Sometimes, in these sorts of specs,
even the content gets into the act.  Clearly we have
come a
long ways since then, but there is always that engineer who is
from a different field
and
who has been recruited to work on an implementation of this
interface and needs a little
training or reminding.

Talk to you soon,

Brian Holden
