Presentation#1- Dale Murray, LightCounting

“Ethernet Deployment from an Optical Module Perspective” (http://www.ieee802.org/3/400GSG/public/adhoc/app/murray_app_01a_1013.pdf)

·         Presentation is specific to optical modules

Presentation #2 – Brad Booth, Microsoft

“Early Market PMD Types for Core Router to Transport Interconnect”

http://www.ieee802.org/3/400GSG/public/adhoc/app/moorwood_app_01_1013.pdf

·         Discussion regarding whether objectives should be distance or loss based.

·         Chair expressed concern that trying to come up with a loss based objective would be challenging in Study Group phase, as there is typically significant debate regarding these budgets.  It was noted that some debates are already starting to happen.

·         Individuals from end user companies expressed confidence that they could deal with objectives that are distance based, as they understand dealing with the inherent optical budgets.

·         Chair stated that if there isn’t agreement on a reach objective with specific numbers that as a minimum it was important to resolve the form of the objective in November.

Presentation #4 – John DÁmbrosia, Dell

Objective Considerations: Given Today’s Data Center Environment

http://www.ieee802.org/3/400GSG/public/adhoc/app/dambrosia_app_01_1013.pdf

·         It was noted that breakout functionality just happened during 802.3ba, and that an objective might be a good way to remind the group of the importance of enabling it.

·         Discussion regarding the form of the objective.

·         The following was suggested during discussion

o   Provide appropriate support for breakout functionality to 40G and / or 100G.

·         Individuals expressed concern about unintended consequences, and wanted to see the objective in writing to enable further debate on the reflector.

Chair announced he would review schedule to see if there was time to have another call prior to the Nov Plenary, and would announce it on the reflector.
