Subject: [STDS-802-3] +++ 802.3 WG Initial BALLOT: IEEE P802.3bk Extended
Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON)

TO: 802.3 Voters, Observers and Liaisons

Dear Colleagues:

This is the announcement of the electronic IEEE 802.3 Working Group Initial
ballot on the amendment IEEE P802.3bk Extended Ethernet Passive Optical
Networks (EPON). Remember that voting, as well as attendance, is a
requirement to maintain your IEEE 802.3 member (voter) status. Instructions
for accessing the draft, casting your ballot and submitting comments follow
this announcement. The ballot group for this draft is the IEEE 802.3 voting
membership as of Friday 16th November 2012.

BALLOT SCOPE:
As an Working Group initial ballot, the scope of the ballot is the complete
IEEE P802.3bk draft.

BALLOT OPEN:
Monday 19th November 2012

BALLOT CLOSE:
Sunday 23rd December 2012 23:59 AOE

The Project Authorization Request for this amendment is posted at
<http://www.ieee802.org/3/bk/P802_3bk_PAR_291012.pdf> and includes the
following:

TITLE:
Standard for Ethernet Amendment: Physical Layer Specifications and
Management Parameters for Extended Ethernet Passive Optical Networks

SCOPE:
The scope of this project is to amend IEEE Std 802.3 to add at least one
physical layer specification, possibly optical power budget extenders, and
management parameters necessary for Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON)
to support optical loss budgets in excess of those specified in IEEE Std
802.3-2012 (Standard for Ethernet).

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this project is to extend the optical loss budgets supported
by Ethernet Passive Optical Networks to support higher density and longer
reach applications, while optimizing costs of ownership.

NEED FOR THE PROJECT:
The project is needed to enable broadband service providers to utilize
Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON) at longer reach, higher split
ratios or both for more cost-effective scaling.
The project will allow for the expansion of the EPON service area and
reduced cost per subscriber. Additional benefits include reduction of the
footprint and power consumption of central office equipment, as well as
minimization of service upgrade and fiber deployment costs, while increasing
customer density per central office and allowing central office
consolidation.

Thank you for your participation in this ballot and careful review of the
draft.

vote, therefore only appropriate for an IEEE 802.3 voting member) T =
Technical TR = Technical Required (a binding comment that is part of a
DISAPPROVE vote, therefore only appropriate for an IEEE 802.3 voting member)

1. Prepare your comments in one of the following two ways:

a. You are STRONGLY REQUESTED to use the comment tool at the URL:

<http://www.ieee802.org/3/WG_tools/filemaker/Generic_Commenting_Tool.zip>

To use the tool, extract all components into a folder and do not move any
component from that folder as this will cause the executable to not work
correctly. The tool is:
