Re: [802SEC] FW: Get IEEE 802 report

James-

I did not get the original.
Do you have my correct e-mail address which is <thompson@ieee.org>?
Please resend.

Since I haven't seen the report it is difficult for me to comment on the need to keep the contents private. What I can say is, that it has been my experience that the IEEE staff and boards try to keep their business information much more closely held than I believe is appropriate for the staff and governance of a volunteer organization.

Is there actual data in the "Get IEEE 802" report that goes beyond what has been publicly available from 802 financial reports and minutes? The complete history of our agreements and contributions are available there.

Further, if the IEEE has any desire to modify the agreement, we as members the Exec are duty bound to present the financial rationale to our constituents. Even more so in the current financial climate. "Trust Us" doesn't cut it.

I agree with Tony.

Privacy should only be necessary when we need to protect the
proprietary financial information of potential multiple vendors from each other.

Given that we have only one vendor for the get802 programme, this is
not the situation, and complete openness should be the default position.

James -

I don't get why there is a perceived need to keep this information private - it isn't any
more detailed (and in some ways it is less detailed - no info on costs for example) than
the info that has been presented at previous EC meetings, which are public meetings with
publicly accessible minutes.

What it does show is that the predominant income source for the program is the LMSC
contributions; that being the case, I believe that our membership is *entitled* to have
access to this information (including the missing info on costs) so our members can see
what we are paying for.

Regards,
Tony

Subject: Get IEEE 802 report

Dear EC members

I have been asked by Karen Kenney to distribute this to the private EC
list as it contains financial information. A public version will be
posted to the 802 web site.

Karen will not be in San Francisco.

Thanks

James Gilb
802 EC Recording Secretary
