Re: [802.3_EMS] [EXTERNAL] Re: [802.3_EMS] Metadata definition

I’d be good with that with a minor editorial.    I think it reads better as below as I don’t think Metadata needs to provide all the information.

Additional Explanatory Notes:

5.2.b Metadata is defined by Merriam-Webster as “data that provides information about other data.” For Ethernet, metadata refers to either

  1. Information about the data contained within a packet, or
  2. Information about the data being communicated by the Ethernet link.

How does that look?

I agree with Eugene about citing the M-W definition, and including a generic statement about what metadata could be.  Splitting hairs a bit here, but I would suggest one small tweak to the additional sentence Eugene proposed.   Instead of “information associated with the Ethernet link”, say “information associated with the data carried by an Ethernet link”.  (or maybe use “stream of packets” rather than “data” – the main point is that the Ethernet link itself isn’t data, it’s a part of a network, so data about that link doesn’t quite fit the definition).

I like the m-w definition. For the PAR (notes section 8.1), I think we could use that and add an example from the CFI/overview presentations of what it means for Ethernet, something like:

For Ethernet, metadata can be information about a packet or information associated with the Ethernet link.

An additional thought is that the 2021 IEEE SA Standards Style Manual refers to Merriam-Webster as the resource for IEEE specifications.

And Merriam-Webster has a definition of “metadata:  data that provides information about other data”.  See: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/metadata

All,

I spoke with Bijan after the call, and he forgot at the time he made the comment that OCP had decided to delete the definition due to deadlines.

During the call David had suggested the more we can add – definition, reference – the better off we would be.

That leaves us with what Kent found in NIST –

One public definition of “Metadata” is from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

See:  https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/SpecialPublications/NIST.SP.800-150.pdf   page 38

The definition has an end-note pointing to NIST SP 800-53, Revision 4, Security and Privacy Controls for Federal Information Systems and Organizations, April 2013 (updated 01-22-2015). http://dx.doi.org/10.6028/NIST.SP.800-53r4

Reading the definition I am not sure it is what we want.

I did a search and also found this definition from Techterms –

https://techterms.com/definition/metadata.

It looks to me that the definition for metadata will be dependent upon  the application it is used for.

Essentially, the description David Ofelt provided “Data about data” plus some examples relevant to what we intend it for may be the best definition.

So I looked in the IEEE online dictionary –

metadata

·       Data that defines and describes other data.

This was defined as part of 2802-2022 - IEEE Standard for Performance and Safety Evaluation of Artificial Intelligence Based Medical Devices: Terminology

Thoughts?
