Re: [802.3_ISAAC] Minimum Segment length

Hi Ariel,

Thank you for the question.

I am proposing that the wording related to the length be kept consistent with prior recent 802.3 standards.
The wording generally (not always) used is along the lines of –

“up to at least x meters”

This particular phrase has evolved over several years and is intended to cover all lengths, short and long, “up to x meters”.

My take is that the “at least” part is more relevant to the objectives and PAR so that a specific minimum max length (I know this sounds strange) is targeted.

For example, if the phrase did not have both “up to” and “at least”, we could have something like the following –

  1. “at least 10 meters”. This has a problem that this would allow longer than 10 meters.
  2. “Up to 10 meters”. If this was the language in the objective, it would allow the group to write a draft for 5 meters max even though the intent is to go up to 10 meters.

Hence, the phrase “up to at least x meters”

Regards
Kamal

Hi Kamal,

related to your presentation: Link Segment Related Text for 802.3dm<https://www.ieee802.org/3/dm/public/041725/Dalmia_3dm_01_04172025.pdf>
as the queue was closed here is my question:

You are proposing only the "Max" link segment length from which IL is derived for Coax and STP.
What about "Min" segment length? As this can impact RL.

Thanks,
Ariel
