Proposed Position/Response to DoS

Please review as per today's discussion:

-------------------

T1X1.5 to pursue the specification of a payload-independent
SONET MAC to support the efficient transport of packet data
over SONET networks. This was agreed upon at the Jan 2000
meeting. The new MAC will support both point-to-point and
ring topologies.

Some pertinent documents available at:

9x152681- Generic Format for Carrying Ethernet MAC Frames over SONET
0x151160 - A Generic frame format for Data over SONET (DoS)
0x151470 - Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) for Data over SONET/SDH (DoS)
0x151630 - Open issues on L2 Protection for Data over SONET (DoS)
-------------------
Some Remaining DoS Work:

- Topology Discovery
- Congestion Control (plans to adopt RPR access control mechanisms)
- Protection Switching

Proposed 802 RPRSG Position/Response

802 RPRSG is aware of work underway within T1X1.5.
Although there is potential for significant overlap in MAC
definitions and functionality, it is understood that requirements
at T1X1.5 might actually go beyond simple Data over SONET
as the Standards Project name seem to imply.

Given that 802 RPRSG is striving towards a similar but media
independent MAC protocol, it would be beneficial to all parties
involved if efforts were focused toward a common standard
specially in areas yet to be developed within T1X1.5
(i.e. Topology Discovery, Protection Switching, Congestion
Control, etc.). Alignment to the RPRSG work underway
would be most beneficial.
